Large Animal or Small Animal Vet?

The first question that most people ask a veterinarian they meet is some variation of, "Are you a large animal or small animal veterinarian?"  I almost always say, "I worked on everything from hummingbirds to elephants."  I am one of the luckiest veterinarians in this regard. I have worked as a zoo veterinarian, as a general large animal vet, small animal vet, practice owner, veterinary writer, veterinary web site director and then owner, wildlife rehabilitation organization veterinarian and even as a stall mucker, kennel boy, receptionist and veterinary technician. I worked in a fairly rural community most of my career. I worked where Powhatan and Pocohontas lived. Where John Smith explored and Thomas Jefferson began to think about a new nation. I worked for clients both wealthy enough and poor enough it was hard to imagine living their lives.  I didn't try, I just lived mine -- all nine of them.  I've collected a lot of stories, a little advice and a few photos over the years I hope you will find interesting.
